In Ukraine, a documentary called Occupied is being made about sexual crimes during the war. The authors decided to reveal the topic through the stories of three women who experienced violence in occupation during three different wars: Russia's current war against Ukraine, the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, and the Soviet-German war. "The Occupied will not only depict the problem of war - occupation and violence. In addition, the film destigmatizes raped women and shows ways to overcome traumatic experiences using the examples of the protagonists. One of the objectives of the film Occupied is to show that raped women should not be ashamed of what happened to them, because it is not their fault. Russia uses sexual violence as a tactic of war, a weapon and a tool to humiliate and suppress the Ukrainian people. This was stated by Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has recorded 235 cases of sexual violence as of October this year. The age of the victims ranges from 4 to 82 years old. The largest number of sexual crimes were committed by the Russian military in the Kherson region. Why is the film The Occupied dedicated to the topic of sexual violence during the war? Who are the protagonists of the film, what experiences have they had? How many women have been in Russian captivity for many years, and what is known about their fates? Host Olena Badiuk discusses these and other topical issues in the Pryazovia News project with director Tetiana Hanzha, producer Oksana Ivantsiv, and human rights activist and former prisoner Liudmyla Huseinova.
